You don't have to buy everything at once, buy only amounts or things you know you have the space to store, don't buy food or kitchen items you know you won't use.
Be open to trying new foods like lentils and kidney beans.
Store ingredients in tightly sealed containers. You can use coffee cans to store cereals, rice and flour. Plastic containers from margarine, yogurt or ice cream can also be used. Food can be stored in other rooms if you don't have enough room in your kitchen. For example, you can keep a box of ingredients in a closet or under a bed.

Healthy eating starts by choosing healthy foods- whether they are traditional foods from the land or foods bought at the store. Knowing how to plan ahead and shop carefully can help food dollars go further. Pregnant women do not need to eat a lot of extra foods but they do need to choose healthy foods. They should be encouraged to set a budget and plan carefully.
Traditional foods are a source of important nutrients that can save money. However, not all families have access to traditional foods.
